A nice lazy Saturday morning! I love Spring when I can run at noon and its not too hot. Jogged/ran this in 31.55. Not bad considering my primary source of calories last night was Easter candy...

Felt really tight so I did some yoga after. I don't know if that is a good idea or not.

its a GREAT idea to do yoga after. I just discovered yoga around the holidays and i think it feels so good to do after a run. Sometimes its hard to get the amount of stretching in that it takes and i think its awesome. I do it 2 to 3 x a week after a run, even if its just a little amount. Plus its great for strength training! good job!

Happy Easter!

This was supposed to be just under 6 miles, but I forgot to make a turn and it ended up being a much longer run. Oh well, it felt great and the weather was nice and sunny and I'm not really tired at all and I feel pretty fantastic. I'm worried about adding too much too soon so I'm not going to add too much?

After the run I went out to Easter brunch with some friends :-D

3.4 slow recovery-ish miles from my longer-ish run yesterday. It's definitely spring time - saw a cardinal, red wing black birds, and some male mallard ducks along the river. I can't wait for the bunnies to come out - I'm pretty sick of squirrels.

A quick 20 minutes of upper body weights after.

New Balance Green Miles: 3.40
Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
1.251.252.50

This run was supposed to be 5 slow miles but ended up being 2.5 really really fast miles (I swear almost my 400 meter pace.

Anyway, I run after work on a really beautiful (usually quite populated) flat trail by a river behind my work building. Last summer I saw a few weird things - like a man and a safari hat rummaging in the woods with a crowbar ect. There's a guy who like to play the bag pipes too. Usually it doesn't really bother me. Anyway today I got really paranoid - I see this guy way ahead of me and it looks like he's not in running clothes and he's walking on the trail. I'm about 400ish+ meters behind him and he looks back in my direction and then starts to run with his big jacket flying in the breeze. He stops at a trail map and gets really close to it so I can't see him anymore. Too close to the trail map to actually be reading the trail map? I'm not close enough to see anything well at all but I get creeped out and paranoid and turn around and sprint the 1.25 miles back to the gym at work. The worst thing is that while I'm sprinting I look back and I see that he is now running towards me. I don't think I've ran a faster mile in my life.

My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy and it's all in my head but I don't think I want to run around my work after work anymore?

My other options are to run on the roads around my apartment (country-ish roads, but I'm near a high school and a middle school) before work, or after work.  I don't have a problem with mornings, I leave for work at 7:30AM. I don't know when I'd have to get up...5AM? Is it light when people run in the morning? Is that safe? Do people get up earlier?

My other option is to run on the roads around my apartment after work. I'm afraid I'll get home and loose all motivation once I get back from work and see a nice comfy couch. I get home at 5PM.

I guess a third option is to still run at work. The really nice part is that my work has a gym and I can lift weights after. If I run at home I'll have to adjust and figure out a way to get some lifting in.

I know what you mean by getting freaked out by sketchy looking people when your running on your own. I used to sometimes run in wooded trails by my house and then got creeped out when seeing some sketchy looking men going in there. I know longer run in there! Luckily, I live around lots of neighborhoods I can run in. Anyways, I'm hoping this time I can stick with a training routine and stay motivated.

I think my new route is going to be much harder on my legs being all road instead of trail. Oh well, I'll get used to it. I feel so much safer now though. I still really want to start running before work  but I'm not sure how I feel about running when it's dark before the sun rises...

I have been running since middle school and have never had an injury and then a couple of years ago my knee started hurting after a long run (around 8 miles, but I'm a pretty low mileage runner). Anyways it kept on getting worse. I stopped running because it hurt to even walk. I went to a specialist about it and she diagnosed it as runners knee. I know one of the key symptoms I had would it would hurt to go down more then up (down stairs, etc.) Anyways, she said strengthening my quads would help. Unfortunately, I hate doing any kind of weight work and rarely do it. But when I started running again the pain was pretty much gone and I have been running on and off for the past couple of years barely noticing my knee. But, what you said about going from the treadmill to outside is probably right. i have been running mostly on the treadmill for the past couple years and now want to run outside because the weather is so nice. Anyways, hopefully just making sure I don't increase my millage too fast will help the knee problems disappear. And maybe I better start that quad strenghing!

From lysa on Thu, Apr 16, 2009 at 16:43:18 from 76.23.52.240

I dont think your being paranoid at all! You need to go buy a can of mace. My friend runs with it in her hand at all times. She runs really early in the morning when its still dark. I get freaked out too sometimes, i think its normal. But i also dont think you can be too careful.

Another 3.4 miles - how boring! I've only started to run this route this week and I already feel like a need a new one. I did lots of abs after while I watch some Wheel of Fortune - I haven't seen that show in forever. I also stretched a lot before and after my run and my knees felt so much better.

I'm really enjoying running again. We'll see how I fair when the weather isn't 50-60 and sunny :-P

I could hear my stomach the whole entire run! This morning I tried 2 graham crakers with peanut butter. I guess that wasn't enough. Last weekend I tried wheat toast with pb one day and 1/2 a bagel with pb the other and both felt too heavy. I wonder what is in between?

I grew up only with dogs, so I know very little about cats. Hopefully, it will just go away! I know what you mean about being afraid you won't run. I had the week off from subbing because the schools were out. Now that I'll be back subbing and going to my classes at night I'm afraid I'll slack off too. I ran faster than usual because I could feel it raining harder and harder. I think I accidentally did a tempo run? It was fun, I think I'll do more of these. I hope I don't have to pretend that it's going to pour everytime. Ran the 2.7 miles in 22:30 (8:19 pace).

I was feeling daring so I ran my loop - but in the opposite direction. I know it's earth shattering. I think I like my original way better - it ends on a pretty nasty uphill instead of starting on a easy downhill.

My legs were pretty achy. I think I'm getting some swelling/fluid build up in my outside lower shin/ ankle area. During my run it felt really tight and after my run it hurt to touch. Good thing Friday is a rest day.

Really really slow running today. My calves felt tight and painful for 3 miles! Then all of a sudden it went away. Does it take my legs 3 miles to warm up??? That would be terrible, because that's all I run for now :-P

One of the streets I ran on was having a giant neighborhood yard sale. It felt like I was running through a wal-mart isle. I was very tempted mid-run to buy lemonade from a kid, but I don't normally run with money.

45 minutes on the stationary bike in the gym at my work. I just picked the "random" setting and put it on level 7. I don't run with an MP3 player so listening to music while I work out makes it extra special. I also had a magazine in front of me, but I was struggling with level 7 which made it quite difficult for me to be able to focus.

I think I'm in the very early stages of shin splints :-( I haven't been adding mileage, and I added a cross training day. I don't know whether to keep going along like I am or to dial it back a bit. Careful with the shins. Try running at a comfortable pace and sustain the pace. Forget for the time being about speed. Try, slowly, to build up mileage, but take it easy & listen to your body.

Good luck.

Aside from some AM push-ups (I went from 7 to 10 in one set!) today is a rest day.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

My left shin has been hurting and it really scares me. I had a stress fracture in college from the stress of being a triple jumper. I know my shin pain  isn't a stress fracture and that shin pain is normal. However, I've been getting some weird ankle swelling, calf tightness, shin pain, and other lower leg problems, so today I'm forcing another rest day on myself. I'm not throwing in the towel, just  trying to be extra conservative.

I did 45 min. of yoga for runners from yogadownload.com and it really loosened my legs up. The plan for today is calf massages and ice.

Tomorrow I really want to go for a run.

I would suggest to keep going the 6 days of the week and one day off. instead, maybe one of the six days could be cross training, if there is too much pain.

Take the miles slowly, maybe increase in 0.5 miles per day every two weeks. See how that goes.

And remember: R.I.C.E. !!

Cheers & hope you are ok.

45 minutes bike at the gym. I did the hill program on level 7 - this was much more difficult for me than running.

I bought a calf sleeve a while ago and it arrived in the mail. I plan to wear it on the leg that I fractured a couple years ago and the one that currently feels icky (scientific term). I don't know if it's a good idea, will cause muscle imbalances between left and right calves, ect. but I'm gonna take it for a spin Wednesday.

Oops...should have clarified...it was just a stress fracture. Too many jumping events in college - triple jump, hurdles, long jump, and sprints. Being 5'10 they stuck me in all of 'em.

Wow, You probably have the speed that you need for marathons. Im close to 6 feet tall and was always amazed at how anyone could jump over hurdles while spinting! Amazes me. You do get injured pretty easy doing those ive noticed. The Triple jump is amazing to watch also. Sounds like it took its toll on you. Your still young and have your speed though! :) All I get to rely on is my miles per week haha.

Temperature: 48 and windy.

Woke up at 5:45AM got ready and ate a bowl of oatmeal, a banana, and a spoonful of pb. (I heard my stomach at mile two; maybe I should eat more, or have less time elapse before the race, or was it too full?)

My roommate and I picked up a friend who was also running at 6:45AM. We arrived at the parking lot at 7:20 after getting lost for awhile – even though we used a garmin to get us there.  I, of course, was freaking out :-D. My friend had to register for the race thankfully the line was short and we were warming up by 7:40.

The start of the race was pretty terrible – I had to weave around so many people even though I was fairly close to the front – it makes me so angry! The course was downhill and with the wind for the first 1.5 miles and the last 1.6 miles was uphill and into the wind.

First mile: 7:36
Second Mile: 7:46
Last mile+: 9:35ish I guess the strong wind and hill really got to me. I do confess to drafting off of the guy in front of me though for this last part.

Post-race I had 2 cookies and a banana to balance out the cookies. We were too cold to hang around so we hoped in the car and drove to dunkin doughnuts where I ordered a medium hazelnut coffee and a chocolate kreme doughnut to soothe aching calves thanks to the hillish course.

Overall I’m happy with the way everything went. Despite the hills and wind I shaved about 3 minutes off of my last years 5k! This is only my second 5k and I know I have so much experience to gain.

Nice job. Sounds like you need to move even closer to the front at the start, and maybe slow it down some on your first two miles. Also it sounds like you had plenty to eat. Keep up the good work and you'll drag that last mile time way down and PR big time!

5k races are hard. Its a very fast race. I find longer distances easier.

But good job on your race.

As you build up your base mileage, you will see improvements in your 5k times!!

Cheers.

I heard that one is not an easy course. My brother has run it before and mentioned how tough the hill can be. Great job on the new PR, 3 minutes is a lot for a 5K!

Went to my parents gym because it has been raining all week. It was so hot in there I could wring my shirt out when I left.

Got new shoes this week too. The other ones were giving me blisters in my arch. There is a new balance factory store realatively close by :-D

Such a low mileage week and to sum up my excuses - this week has been crazy with moving out of my college apartment, flying to CA for 2 months (tomorrow), and it's been cold and rainy.

So in this past week and 1/2 I graduated from college, moved everything I own from New York to  Maine, and then flew out to California to visit my boyfriend. I'll be here for over a month!

I haven't done a track workout in two years - since I got a stress fracture on the track team. I was a jumper and  a short sprinter so long distance track workouts to me are foreign.

1 mile warm up.

4x400 (1:44, 1:39, 1:41, : 139) with walk 200m jog 200m rest in between each.

2x200 (46.50, 46.10) with walk 200m in between.

1 mile cool down.

As my first track workout in forever, I didn't worry about times, just wanted to see  where I  am.

While the Garmin Forerunner 50 is great for recording time and tracking your heartrate, it is not a GPS watch and will not provide anything in regards to distance, pace, etc. After running for a year with just a stop-watch and using mapmyrun.com I finally invested in the Forerunner 305; purchased from amazon.com for $165. It is the best investment I have made in regards to improving my training. It has changed the way I train and has improved my running ability exponentially better than if I didn't have it. Just a suggestion.

From beef on Thu, Jun 04, 2009 at 11:36:47 from 71.197.69.203

Doesn't the 50 have a foot pod that does distance? Or is it terrible?

Thanks for the advice. The 305 also looks 5x bigger than my wrist so I was nervous to buy it.

From jun on Thu, Jun 04, 2009 at 11:39:07 from 71.213.18.126

The 305 is a bit of a monster, but you get used to it very quick. I know plenty of dainty women who use it without issues. I don't even notice it any more.

Not sure about the foot pod with the 50. It might have one. I don't think it really replaces what you can do with the 305 though. And for the cost of membership at Costco, plus the cost of the watch, you aren't far off from something that can do 100 times more. Again, just my 2 cents.

Take it easy, last thing you want is an injury. Your long run was almost 50% of your week's mileage. That is too much.

I'm planning to do my long run tomorrow and at most I'll do 10 miles, no more than that! (at least for now).

I'm not sure whether "Race overall Place" is for women or women and men. Out of 230 people I placed 86th and out of 111 women I placed 19th. My average pace was 54:42.

Saturday was a beautiful day for my first 10k race! I didn't really have a time in mind, I just wanted to come out of it feeling good.

My boyfriend and I started the morning with a good mile warm-up, stretches, and a few warm-up drills. We lined up close to the front, closer than I've ever been before. The first part of the race was on the road and after the first 1/2 a mile to mile or so it snaked onto a dirt bike trail. Some part of the trail were very holey and rocky and I felt like I was running a trail race. I can't imagine that the people pushing the strollers got past that stretch! After the rocky parts we ran parallel to the river which distracted me from my side cramp for awhile. This race was so hilly. The trail was marked with markers in miles and in km and I got pretty confused with splits so I ended up with no individual mile times. I do know that I kept the pace for most of the race for the first 4 miles and I slowed down to a crawl for the fith mile.

The path entered another rocky patch and I saw my boyfriend who finished before me (49:48) who came back to tell me to push it because the finish line was just behind the bend in the road. I sprinted the last 200m in my best college sprinting form (probably my 400m pace) and I heard people saying "wow she's running fast." Whoops.

I had way too much in me in the end. I need to learn how to push myself better but overall I'm very happy about this race!

So painful!

Ever since my long run last week my knee has been so painful, I haven't been able to run for the past three days. The tendons (?s) on both sides of my knee start to feel tight and hurt and when flexing and impact with the ground. When I'm in the middle of a run it feels like I won't be able to bend  or straighten my leg all the way.  Once I stop running I don't feel it anymore.

Not sure what to do, I was hoping three days of rest would cure it! It got better, but not much.

It's my birthday tomorrow! I'll be spending the weekend in San Fransisco. I was hoping to do a run from my hotel across the San Fransisco bridge but I'm not sure anymore.

I ran with the mid-Michigan track club. I'm not sure if this goes under the category of good ideas. It was awkward because I didn't know anyone, but it was fun and I pushed myself harder than I would have done alone.

The workout was 3x1 mile. We started every 12 minutes (speedier people did 10), so the slower you ran, the less rest you got). The course was in a cemetery and it was surprisingly hilly. I'm not sure of my splits yet as they haven't been posted and I didn't have enough brain oxygen to remember anything. I think they were something along the lines of 7:36, 7:45, 8:10...I know I ran 10 to 20 seconds slower each time and I was one of the last ones to finish the last mile. I'm definitely not in shape to run any sort of negative splits.

I signed up for the 5k on Sunday! I'm definitely in no shape for a PR but I'm excited!

Today I ran slowly - for some reason once I get a bad side stitch in one run - it's easier to get them in subsequent runs.

I knew that I wouldn't PR today...I didn't think I'd win my age group!

Splits-ish: I forgot to stop my watch at the line...

Mile 1: 7.56

Mile 2: 8.11

Mile 3.1: 8.43

I lined up right near the front - it was a smaller race of 350 or so, so it wasn't that difficult to get up there. Right at the start about 7 or so women passed me- we stayed in that order until the finish - although I almost caught up to one at the end.

The course was all on paved bike trails and it was very pretty. My only issue was that there was one out and back hairpin turn that was around a cone on the narrow trail which wasn't very fun.

I don't see how people can do detailed mile by mile reports - I never remember much. Basically I went out at a good pace - my stomach gurgling the entire way (I really need to fix this), let some people go ahead of me with the intention of speeding up after the first mile, didn't speed up although I think I could have, and then the race ended and I got a massage :-D

I was pretty surprised to see that I won my age group and I recieved a shiny medal at the end. I also won a door prize (a long sleeve T that's too large) and ate way too much. The MSU women's basketball team helped out with the race and the winners had to get their pictures taken with them. I can't wait for the pictures to be posted.

A PR (by almost a minute!?) I got a mug for getting in the top five of my age group, I really needed one too. I'm really not happy with this race though - I did several stupid things today.

I started the morning eating so much oatmeal. It was so good with strawberries and bananas in it but I ate until it hurt...such a bad idea.

I also didn't really know what to wear. The morning started out being in the 40's and slightly rainy. By 10AM when the race started the weather was in the 50's and not rainy. I ended up wearing shorts with a long sleeve black under armour type top. I was.sweating.so.much.

Me in the upper left (number 457). I do look less in pain then the rest of the people I'm running near :-D

I had a really good warm-up, usually I'm too timid. I lined up fairly close to the start, aparently close enough. A guy wearing JEANS stepped in front of me. I should have moved up...

Worried that I lost too much time weaving through runners wearing jeans I ran a really fast first mile...at 7:30 (which includes the 15 seconds I spent standing in place after the gun went off...).

The second mile was a really a bad one. Pain hadn't  set in yet but I doubted myself and thought very negatively the entire mile which ended up being 7:49.

The third mile I was wheezing and side stitching and complaining. I definitely gave up, I even told myself I gave up! The third.1 mile was 8:56, and several people in my age group whizzed by me at the last few yards.

My splits don't add up to my time and I was even quite diligent with my watch this time. Maybe they didn't start my time until I crossed the start line?

After the race..my neck glands hurt and I couldn't breathe in all the way without coughing. I did some cool down stuff,  ate some food, and headed home.

A one minute PR on a 5k is awesome, especially on a full stomach! 5Ks are so brutal, I always feel like puking at the end. It would be really ugly if I ate first :)

Yeah for the PR!!! That is awesome. I can not believe jeans guy. How do you run in jeans? And that weaving is hard, especially in a short race!!

5k's are so tough! Honestly, my 5k, 10k, and half marathon paces are all the same. I need some warm up time to get moving. You did awesome, and running on a full gut had to be fun!

I can't believe it's pitch dark at 5pm now! Ran 4 miles on the treadmill, averaged 8 mile pace (with no incline). My goal is to keep up my running throughout finals week (next week) and through the snow storms we are supposed to get.

4.4 miles, 39 minutes, 12 degrees, very windy, and snow covered sidewalks. I was feeling super hardcore until I saw another runner :-D

I am laughing because I was thinking the same thing this morning and then I saw 2 women running towards me!!

Nice job in the cold and wind (cold not so bad, wind BAD!!!!)

I should have really ran out side today. It was 30 degrees and sunny this morning! Instead, I felt a strong urge to watch TV so I ran 5.5 miles at the gym of my apartment complex watching the Today show. It might be the only TV I watch during finals week :-P

I was super excited about running outside today, everything is covered in ice though. 3 boring treadmill miles - the other guy in the apartment gym was watching ESPN and doing burpees...

1 mile into my run I realized that I didn't turn off my alarm clock, I doubled back to the apartment to prevent angry roommates (who sleep until 1pm!) I went out again and a bit further than I mile when got a pretty bad side stitch - I think I was breathing too shallow (12 degrees out). My jaw was also frozen, which was worrisome, so I doubled back again to the apartment. I think I'll buy a neck warmer over break.

Ran after my last final of the semester and before my flight to Maine! My first flight was delayed 3 hours, and my second flight was delayed 2 hours. I'm thankful I'm not stuck like a lot of people this season.

3.5 Maine miles with the boyfriend. We just beat the snowstorm that started to roll in.

No sidewalks plowed :-( If they were, they were just solid blocks of ice. I've got to find longer routes in my hometown - last time I was here I couldn't run very far!

Same route as yesterday. 19 degrees. Running in the roads, this time lots of oil trucks though...

I was planning to run in the morning, but it was 9 degrees. I'm on vacation so i just lounged around and ended up going to the gym with my parents at 8pm. They don't stay very long so I only got in 3 miles and a little bit of arms & abs.

I could definitely feel the lifting and running I did last night. It was 32 degrees and sunny this morning so I couldn't miss out. I'm still dripping with sweat though. I think that 20 degrees is the better winter running temperature :-D

Gym with the family again. 3 miles & leg lifts. It's pouring and almost freezing outside :-(

What a low mileage couple of weeks!

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out tomorrow (all of them?), I don't think I'll be running for awhile...
